What Some Think Is Healthy vs. What Actually Is

For the longest time, I thought being “healthy” meant cutting out sugar, seed oils, and every so-called “bad” food. I thought I was doing the right thing by keeping my family and myself safe. But guess what? I wasn’t getting healthier.

The Problem with “All or Nothing” Thinking

Here’s what my life looked like back then:

  • Skipping treats and then overindulging later. I’d avoid sweets for weeks, only to binge on them during a moment of stress.
  • Yo-yo dieting. My weight was constantly up and down, making me feel stuck in a cycle.
  • Feeling out of control. Weekends turned into free-for-alls because I felt deprived all week.

And the worst part? My kids were watching. They saw me stress over food, avoid certain things, and eat “guilt” meals. That wasn’t the example I wanted to set.

What’s Actually Healthy?

It took me a while, but I realized: health isn’t about banning foods; it’s about balance. A cookie won’t ruin your health. Neither will an occasional fried snack. It’s what you do consistently that matters.

Here’s what healthy living looks like now:

  1. No food is off-limits. I enjoy treats mindfully instead of avoiding them entirely.
  2. Whole foods first. Most of our meals are made with fresh, nourishing ingredients like fruits, vegetables, and proteins.
  3. Small indulgences are okay. Dessert here and there? Yes, please. Without guilt!
  4. Health is more than food. I focus on movement, mental well-being, and spending quality time with loved ones.
